The Ruhr area is the scene of transformation of an industrial region, where the
Zoll verein pit and its coking plant in Essen were considered to be one of its biggest
and most productive industrial sites. The last shift went down into the pit at
Zollverein in 1986 and the coking plant was closed down in 1993. The complex
became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001. This Neue Architekturführer
provides competent and compact information about the both fascinating and
difficult task of developing Zollverein into a business location and tourist destin -
ation with an emphasis on design, creative industry and art, while adhering to
the World Heritage Committee’s strict guidelines.
